TITTERSTONE CLEE HERITAGE TRUST

AUTUMN COUNTRY FAYRE
& HIGH-LAND GAMES 2011

SATURDAY 3rd Sept

CLEE HILL-CAYNHAM ROAD 11am to 5pm

Despite uttering those immortal words NEVER AGAIN ! The TCHT Autumn Country Fayre is back

But this year with a new venue and incorporating The High-Land Games. The result of an adventurous discussion between several members of the TCHT committee over a few pints of Ludlow Breweries Stairway to Heavoon (Don’t know what they put into that excellent brew but it can lead to some interesting places (and spelling). In the dim and distant past Titterstone Clee was the scene for an end of summer celebration, THE CLEE HILL WAKE. This year Titterstone Clee Heritage Trust is awaking this age-old
tradition of the Clee Hill Wakes. Last held in the mid 19th century the wakes featured the young men of the area proving their physical prowess by a series of games on the summit of Titterstone Clee. These were watched by the young ladies of the hill who then picked out their partners for a session of lively dances (and such).
(C.S Burne writing in the 1885 ‘Shropshire Folk-Law’ writes “The summer festivities of the county came to an end on the last Sunday in August with the ‘Titterstone Wake’, held on the most southery of our beautiful hills”)

The High-Land Games which will feature:

The event will of course also include all the usual TCHT Autum Fayre stalls and crafts:

WI teas and cakes and much more. AND A REAL ALE Bar courtesy of Ludlow Breweries and Aaron. Not to forget our old friends Peter and Chris who will be providing their excellent organic cider from MAHORAL CIDER

FARM home of the Autumn Fair over the last three years.

The Fayre will take place at the top of the Caynham road, close to its junction with the A4117 Clee Hill to Ludlow Road (National Grid Reference SO587,754 Post Code SY8 3JQ.
The gate will open to the public at 11am and the Fayre will end at 5pm. There will be on site parking, marshals aiding entry from the Caynham road and guiding parking.
